Hordes: Ironback Spitter

The Ironback Spitter is the last Warbeast to be released for the Blindwater Congregation, best described as a giant cranky phlegm spitting turtle (or Gamera), this beast fits perfectly with it's fellow swamp creatures from the bayou. The figure is a large pewter multi part kit with intricately carved armour details, and comes in 6 components.

The first thing I noticed is the upper and lower torso fit like a ball and socket joint, which allow a few more posing options then anticipated, this is something not overly apparent from the stock photo released by Privateer Press. The major parts are hollow meaning a much lighter model, but one that will not fall to pieces at the slightest nudge, however while this means little need for pinning, it will require putty to fill in the inevitable gaps.

One of the things I dislike about this model however are the arms, I don't like the clenched fist sculpt and rigid pose. If I am to be honest it makes me think the poor turtle ate something rancid and has a horrible case of the number two's, something that would make anyone cranky...and probably spit acid.

I am looking forward to fielding this beastie in my upcoming games, while I have had a lot of success with the Blindwater to date, the release schedule had me missing a little bit of range and I am hoping old cranky will help even up the odds with some nasty spittle.

Warmachine: Koldun Kapitan Valachev

Privateer Press have previewed the first of 2011's Wrath figures (not including Torch). Based on the description, Valachev does what a Greylord normally does; of casting magic and protecting units; however the line 'Strength of the motherland to mercenary units' put an interesting twist on things. The first thing that comes to my mind is the allowance of Khadoran Feats to apply to Mercenary units led by Valachev.  Imagine Kommandant Irusk combined with the upcoming Ogrun Assault Corps, performing FEAT: Undying Loyalty or Butcher of Khardov's FEAT: Blood Frenzy.

To apply Faction benefits to Mercenary units existing or forth coming is coming to bring interesting changes to Faction game play, is this perhaps the start of a trend to bring more power back to infantry units? As is the case of previews this is pure speculation until I get access to the card/Faction book. The sculpt itself is not my favourite, looking like a bearded Zerkova, regardless of this if the power potential is as high as the announcement dictates, then we can expect this character to appear frequently and supported by the meanest Mercenary units around.

Khador is not the only faction however to receive a UA with this ability, according to the release schedule both Cygnar and Menoth will gain UA's that will provide abilities to Mercenary units, Cryx has yet to be announced.

BattleFoam: P3 Expansion pack

Battlefoam; creators of the official Privateer Press bags have released a infomercial showcasing their latest Privateer Press licensed product, the "P3". This is great news especially owners of the current (and awesome) Warmachine and Hordes storage bags. The P3 pack is cited as a hobby extension, a very cool idea for people who like to bring art supplies on holiday (like me!). Boasting high storage capacity and inbuilt brush holders, Battlefoam are continuing to secure themselves as the best in figure storage,  naturally the foam itself  will be fully customisable meaning you can carry the right items at the right time.

What this pack also does is make use of the the zip lock located at the bottom of both the Warmachine and Hordes bags, since the release of the original Warmachine & Hordes packs owners have wondered at what Battlefoam would produce to make use of this. Finally, the range continues it's "official stance' by making sure the new P3 bag has the same embroidered finish to match the parent packs, I am curious though to see if Battlefoam make a green version to match the Horde pack.  With Christmas approaching, I would think the sales strategy would be for a holiday release, the next few weeks will tell.

To see the full Battlefoam pack and foam ranges visit their home site: Battlefoam V2

For UK buyers interested in getting a official Warmachine/Hordes bag and Battlefoam's trademarked foam, visit: Wayland Games - Discount Wargames They are an official Battlefoam seller and the place where I got my own Warmachine bag. After much comparison, the postage and cost break down were much cheaper than my other on-line retailers, and had the ability to track delivery to a one hour window. Very secure, very fast and highly recommended by me.

Hordes: Farrow Razorback Crew

Keen readers of Privateer Press' No Quarter magazine would have seen previews of the concept art for the Farrow Razorback. Hot on it's trail is the figure itself. Described as a crude rocket launcher, I expect highly inaccurate but with very high POW, which adds potential long range artillery to the Farrow's already impressive medium to short range fire power.

The Razorback crew finishes the known SKU's for the Farrow force, which could indicate no more Minions releases until the next Hordes expansion, time will tell. With Warmachine "Wrath" scheduled for June 2011, a big question mark is up concerning what will fill the void of 2011's first quarter.

Hordes: Minion Bull Snapper Review

Just finished reading through the latest No Quarter Magazine (33), the theme strongly set on Minions with more previews and a awesome battle report between Blindwater's Bloody Barnabas and The Farrow's Lord Carver. For those curious about the new Blindwater Congregation, NQ32 shows the Bull Snapper light warbeast hinted at in NQ32 as support beast to fellow gators with some melee punch. Naturally this opened up speculation of shield walling or even counter attack possibilities.

Statistically, the Snapper has average stats all-round for a light warbeast, at first glance the POW12 bite is unimpressive, defence low like all other gators and has a relatively low ARM of 14 which seems to move away from the idea of Gators being a ARM reliant force, or does it?...

Where this beast begins to shine however , is the abilities. At a ability to cost ratio the Bull Snapper is magnificent, for 3 points we get access to sustained attack,  non-forced +2 charges vs living models and of course it's Animus: Spiny Growth. This is a very defensive ability as mentioned in the last NQ, which grants + 2 armour within 6" making the Wrastler a very impressive ARM 21. As a further benefit any Warjack or Warbeast that hits a model under Spiny Growth takes D3 damage. While this means the Snapper can bump it's own ARM to 16, at time of writing I am viewing this ability as a very effective anti assassination tool when stacked with Bloody Barnabas, most 5 wound melee assassins (Manhunters?) will be able to land hits but will struggle to bypass ARM21, culminating in 2D3 Spiny Growth wounds and a very alive (and angry) Barnarbas ready to bite back...

There is one ability(limitation?) however: Torpid. Should your Snapper destroy a living model, it's activation ends after resolving attack, you then get to remove 1 Fury point. On the one hand, you gain a Fury, on the other though you need to make sure you have done everything you need to in terms of buffing before committing to combat, food for though? *sorry* Again for the cost of 3 points, it is a lot of supportive ability and sustained attack, so rest assured this warbeast can provide some hurt when required. I am really looking forward to picking one up (8th Dec!) as I am intrigued by the rules and really like the sculpt. With the Force book arriving at the same time, I will be interested to see if more Blindwater figures are due (after all Wrath is scheduled for June!) and also if those figures will be beasts to reflect the more savage nature of the Blindwater Congregation.

Privateer Press Army Bundle deals

The holiday season is coming into full swing with Privateer Press offering bundle deals on all the major factions, including the recently released Farrow. The bundles comprise of the new starter boxset, a faction warjack or warbeast, full infantry unit and solo (equating to a 35pts force).

To top is all off, the bundle deals are being sold with accessories, the following items come with the bundle deals: Tape measure, faction tokens and a Privateer Press dice set. This gives me hope that a separate Privateer Press dice set is around the corner (maybe even faction dice?!), to replace the very popular GF9 Facton dice released some years ago.

Issue 33 of No Quarter will be a interesting one, with the two newest Horde's faction going at it in a battle report: Swamp Stomp will see a Minion themed battle report supported by a case file on Farrow Warlock Lord Carver. Fans of the Farrow and Blindwater Congregation should definitely get hold of this issue.

This week Privateer Press has also revealed future releases for the Legion of Everblight and Trollbloods. Firstly we have Bethayne and Belphagor, an interesting set of characters who can 'meld' together to form some form of super creature.

The Trollbloods receive further reinforcements in the form of a unit attachment. The Fenblade Officer and drummer will undoubtedly allow access to new orders and skills.

Available 24/11/10

These items are available for advance order now and with the variety of release schedule, there is something for everyone. The only question now is, what (when?) to expect Warmachine MKII's next expansion "Wrath"...

Hordes: Blindwater Congregation

I have been a long time Warmachine fan/gamer, starting in 2003 and have collected nothing but Khador (I have every figure in the range with spare to go around) since I first saw the Faction starter box set, last weekend though this changed...

I did not really see the appeal of Hordes when it first came out, being so comfortable with the Khador play style and theme. There was something about the lack of guns that made it feel like bringing a primitive stone axe to a gatling gun fight. The release of the new Minion's book however changed that, I am still bringing a stone axe to the fight but I am also bringing a huge angry beast with it in the form of the Farrow & Blindwater Congregation. For those unfamiliar; the Farrow is essentially a army of man sized, mechanically altered pigs with guns and cleavers, while the Blindwater Congregation consist of Bayou style gator men, associated reptilian allies and lots of teeth.

Whilst I managed to resist the Farrow, I did finally succumb to Blindwater...

I have always wanted to work on something Crocodilian ever since I saw Crocodile Game's amazing Sobeki range, however the narrow minds of my gaming group meant that they would never see table action outside of perhaps proxy Beastmen. So since the group has finally moved with the times and opened their minds to Privateer Press, the Blind Water Congregation fills the need for something different in terms of gaming and a modelling project I have wanted to do for some time. Last weekend I picked up the latest recruits for the Blindwater Congregation: The massive Blackhide wrastler, Thrullg and Warlock Bloody Barnabas, on route is the Croak Hunter. Since the push towards plastics for Warmachine, fans were convinced that the same process would occur with Hordes, however the stringent release schedule (all army books for both games in the first year) set for Warmachine/Hordes MKII release has meant that sticking to metals for at least one gaming brand will yield more product on time (the delays on the plastic Man O War Bombardiers reinforce this).

Bloody Barnarbas
Extremely cool figure in my opnion, something about a hooded Crocodile man in a hood that just states "I'm gonna eat yuuu!". There have been some reports of the arms not fitting in the sockets properly, but I seem to have been lucky having no glaring issues constructing this figure. The skull back banner keeps in line with the voodoo swamp theme consistent through out the army.

From a game point of view...He ain't no Butcher. Boasting three melee attacks and a spell proc'd from kills, you would be mistaken into thinking this caster is pure melee offence. He is not. While quantity has a value of it's own, the low power of the attacks mean he is designed around beating (and eating) light to medium armour units. Blood Boon allows for selective killing and a way of increasing the survivability of units in combat. Keep him in the second line dropping swamps on people's heads and commit him to winnable combats (Or wait for an opportune 'Counter Attack') which can allow you to get the kill needed to cast spells for your line. His feat is a Command range knockdown effect that does not effect amphibious units...be wary of certain Cryx units.

*On a random note, it's great when he critical bites queue "Nom nom nom" noises when it does ;)

The Blackhide Wrastler
The Wrastler (equivalent to a Heavy Warjack) is a big but very detailed chunk of pewter, every tooth and scale has been sculpted in amazing detail making for a nice textured figure to paint. The stock comes with a very bad 'surfing' style pose but after holding the figure in hand, I can see that the pose was heavily exaggerated by poor photography and the model itself looks very nice indeed.

From a gaming perspective, the Wrastler is interesting. I suffer from the unfortunate fact that I have played Khador for 7 years and as a result armour and hitboxes were always going to be lacking, but with armour at 19 it is still quite impressive. Death Roll and Animus combo will be interesting way of maximising the bite attack and in true Crocodilian fashion it does seem that the power of the Gatormen is in their bite. The Wrastler has a special ability to knock itself and it's target down, the advantage of this is boosted damage and of course automatic hits in melee, be aware that your Wrastler will also count as knocked down, yet still retains the ability to attack. Luckily...his animus allows him to stand back up again...

The Thrullg
This purple menace has been coined as the Horde's version of Eiryss. Basically a creature that feeds off magic, it can strip magical buffs all from the comfort of reach and has a dead zone for magic, can consume focus and cause disruption.  However the lack of amphibious and any form of ranged deterrent means careful play and screening to get the most out of this (be careful with Barnaba's Feat or have a Wrastler Animus spare) . I see this creature as a second line null zone that will debuff units for   your heavy hitting units, if the opportunity to assassinate magic users crops up though...take it.

A very creative figure design that oozes eeriness. I like the purple colour scheme, which will break up painting all the Gatormen scales, am really look forward to painting mine up.

So my thoughts on Blindwater Congregation? Savage and primal, just like the plug for Hordes. With the shift in MKII towards more units with firepower, it is nice to see a army retain the primitive of the spectrum. With tier bonus' yet to be shown (if any) there are still a few surprises waiting, but from the outset Blindwater looks like a control based army with a score of hardy first line troops and a heavy hitting second wave. Treat it like a melee beat stick and you will probably lose, a little planning and placement will allow the user to set masterful ambushes and counter strikes, that most factions will not be able to weather (unless your khador *joke*). I hope to share my near complete Wrastler by the end of the week and will be reviewing the rest of the Blindwater figures as they are released, hopefully with the holiday season approaching I will also be able to give some actual game accounts of how they play.

Privateer Press 2011 release Schedule.

Privateer Press has put up January 2011's release schedule. Still no sign of the missing units from various Warmachine faction books such as the Khador Man O War Bombardiers or Retribution Cavalry unit. As a result I wonder if the first expansion (Wrath) will be pushed back in favour of finishing the primary release schedule. Time will tell.

Warmachine
  • PIP31085 Cygnar Lancer Light Warjack (1)
  • PIP32081 Protectorate of Menoth Revenger Light Warjack (1)
  • PIP34087 Cryx Deathripper Bonejacks (2)
Hordes
  • PIP71049 Trollblood Trollkin Slugger Unit (5)
  • PIP73044 Legion of Everblight Bethayne & Belphagor (2)
  • PIP73054 Legion of Everblight Annyssa Ryvaal Light Cavalry Solo
  • PIP74052 Skorne Venator Flayer Cannon Crew (3)
  • PIP75024 Minions Gatorman Ironback Spitter (1)
  • PIP75031 Minions Farrow Razorback Crew (2)

On the plus side, the Horde releases continue to pour in with more Blind Water reinforcements such as the Ironback Spitter (Gamera!). The latest stream of Gator figures has finally pushed me over the edge and hopefully this Autumn/Winter will see the starts of a Blind Water Congregation force.

Hordes: Dr Arkadius

Privateer Press have released photos of Dr Arkadius, the crazed surgeon for the Farrow armies. I admit to really liking the figure, it has the right amount of Steam punk crossed with Back to the Future esque mad Doc looks "Great Scott!".

Hordes: Captain Gunnbjorn

This summer Privateer Press released Hordes MKII, fans have already seen the infamous Lord Carver and his Warhog. But today Privateer present us this:

Described as a ex-Cygnar soldier, Gunnbjorn brings modern tactics to the Trollblood Kriels (with his obscenely large heavy bazooka as a backup!). This figure is pure eye candy and is consistent with the previous released Horde's images in terms of detail and inventiveness. It might just be enough to make me break out my Trollblood's army again.

Captain Gunnbjorn is slated for a early September release, secure your Hordes here: www.WaylandGames.co.uk

Hog wild!

It has been a very GW orientated year so far and quite frankly I need a change of scenery. I was a very avid collector of Warmachine but stopped focusing on the game this year as releases slowly trickled out with MKII. However with the advent of Hordes MKII I have gathered new steam (pun intended). While the Khador army remains boxed, a whole bunch of Farrows were unboxed. Due to the limited number of units it feels like a brand new army despite having been released some time ago.

Lord Farrow is pretty much the main reason why I have come back to the Privateer fold, I was not so impressed with the War Hog (below) but with the release of a Farrow warlock, my options of fielding a full Farrow army are becoming reality.

Privateer Press Chris Walton's comments on the War Hog: "I think this guy will look awesome next to our previous Farrow heavy, Brine. Where Brine is nature gone wrong, this guy is science gone horribly awry. I also like the ironic touches of arming him with two meat cleavers"

So why Farrow? Well after collecting and painting almost every Khador figure from Prime release onwards, I really needed a change of colour! I dabbled very briefly in Trollkin but despite the great models, I could not bring myself to paint so much blue (partially due to a large Cygnar commission I had been working on). Also I really like the sculpts, more so than the Trollkin as boarmen are not something you see too often in other game systems so again the change is most welcome especially in a game set where four major factions are the standard. From a rules perspective, I have enjoyed what I have read (despite the comical swine references) and look forward to playing this unique force over the coming year. I am sure my regular Cryx opponent will be shocked and probably a little delighted that I am leaving the Khador boxed up for now and switching to something very alien to me.

Lord Carver, the War Hog and Hordes MKII will be released on the 28th July. For those not suffering from Hog fever now is probably as good a time as any to reinforce you existing Warmachine and Hordes armies especially with Hordes MKII looming. I have to admit the more I look at the Warhog, the more I agree that it is going to look amazing standing next to Brine, more Farrow Warbeasts please!
