We were talking at work last week about how it has become trendy lately to design music videos and commercial spots look like "vintage CG" from the 80's. In general, I hate this choice because it's not executed well in the few spots I have seen so far. Making bad masks and bright psychedelic colors to be "cool" is just bad design and poor form.
Even the first video to be played on MTV - Video Killed the Radio Star looks better than most of these attempts to pay homage to the early CG "look." The thing was, it wasn't like we wanted the motion graphics to look like that. We just worked as best we could with our given resources.
But! this music video for DVNO brings back memories of my very first days in the early 1990's in Atlanta where I worked for several production houses that specialized in logos and corporate identity. I worked with programs like HIREZ QFX, Quantel, Topas 3D, Rio, Tips, Autographix, Softimage on really big sgi boxes; and even 3D Studio on DOS.
The DVNO Music Video is a kind of tribute to the spinning logos, motion graphics and early CG days of Abel, Omnibus, Digital Productions, Rezn8, etc.
